Fire Safety Measures For your STR

Fall is a dry time of year, and depending on your location, fires can become a seasonal threat. It’s always smart to be prepared by having the proper coverage. We at VIFO are always prepared to discuss this potential liability with our customers, but here are some small fire prevention measures anyone can take.

SAFETY TOOLS

To avoid spread, always equipe your STR with one (or more) fire extinguishers in easy-to-find locations. Also identify their whereabouts in your welcome binder. You can also provide renters with a fire safety plan. And while it may seem like a no-brainer, always check your smoke alarms to ensure working batteries. Renters don’t like being interrupted with loud, beeping noises.

It’s good to supply the unit with emergency backups, such as candles and matches, but keep them out of a child’s reach. Flashlights are preferred.

FIRE-RESISTANT LANDSCAPING

Sometimes known as “firescaping”, this doesn’t just mean keeping your grass watered - although checking for proper EPA irrigation is important. If you live in a fire-prone area, such as Utah, Arizona, Nevada, or California, there are some landscaping techniques that could add curb appeal and practical fire prevention. Many attractive plants that have a low sap content that can help defend your STR in case of fire. Conversely, many plants and trees, especially pine trees, are a wildfire pawn. Other small fire-friendly plants include juniper, Leyland cypress, rosemary, eucalyptus, and some ornamental grasses. Removing plants can seem like a hassle, but so is dealing with a pile of burnt rubble!

OUTDOOR REGULATIONS

Most STRs insist that any renter smoke outside the dwelling, but if possible, try to have a designated smoking area for them to comfortably do so. In this space, you can provide simple things like ashtrays and waste cans, no flammables around. If you do have plants nearby, make sure they’re watered to avoid drying out and are fire-resistant. Also kindly remind your guests that chucking cigarette butts into the yard or nearby brush can result in potential wildfires and, if nothing else, a hefty legal fine.

If your property contains a fire pit or outdoor barbecue grill, the same principles apply. Always make sure they are lit in a contained space with no dry plants hanging around. A good rule of thumb is to keep anything that catches fire easily outside a one meter radius of any hot spot.

Unfortunately, wildfires can’t be predicted and can strike and spread without warning. Do you have proper wildfire coverage? Request a consultation today!
